Social Security Field Offices to Reduce Hours Again

Aug 22, 2014 | WC & Other Laws

The Social Security Administration informed its field office employees their offices will close to the public at 3:00 instead of 3:30 as of November 19, 2012. This is the second reduction in office hours for SSA. The agency reduced its office hours to the public by 30 minutes daily back in August 2011. The email to Social Security employees also announced that field offices will close to the public at noon on Wednesdays starting January 2, 2013.

These reductions in field office hours open to the public are to reduce overtime hour by allowing SSA staff to complete their claims work during regular business hours. The stop-gap spending bill signed recently by President Obama has “significantly” less money for agency operations than SSA had requested necessitating the change in public hours. SSA has already closed 20 field office last year and will close 27 more by the end of this year.
