Are Prosthetics Covered by Workers’ Compensation in Colorado?

Are Prosthetics Covered by Workers’ Compensation in Colorado? – In general, Workers’ Compensation will cover medical care you need after being injured to get you back to your full health or at least as close as possible, depending on what your injury was. This can also include having covered prosthetics if needed.

What are Prosthetics?

Prosthetics can be defined as artificial limbs, hearing aids, braces, canes, dentures, and glasses. The carrier, or in other words, the insurance company, has to furnish a prosthetic device for you in the scenario you were to need it because of your work injury.

For example, if you lose your hearing due to a work injury, you are entitled to a new hearing aid. Another example, if you lose an arm because your work injury resulted in an amputation and need an artificial mechanical arm, Workers’ Compensation has to pay for it.

Can I get replacements?

If your prosthetics are provided to improve your condition caused by your work injury, and they wear out from using them, you can get replacements. However, if the prosthetic does not work anymore because your body figure has changed, you are now bigger or smaller than when you originally got injured, then you have to show that the physical change was due to the injury, and not because of something else. Otherwise, you would have to pay for the replacement.
