Applications For Social Security Disability Benefits Are On The Decline

Aug 22, 2014 | WC & Other Laws

In 2012 2.82 million Americans applied for Social Security Disability benefits a 4% decrease from 2011 according to Social Security’s Office of the Chief Actuary.  SSA approved about 980,000 claims, the lowest number since at least 1998.

This decrease in the number of applications last year may be a good omen for the US job market.  Any further decreases in the number of Social Security Disability applications in 2013 if the outlook of the job market improves will be helpful to the SSDI program which is still working on historically high numbers of claims.
